There are several triggers that can set off a dog fight when you least expect it. In addition to being a very unpleasant situation for owners, worry is inevitable when we see a dog fighting (mainly because of the fear of something more serious happening to those involved). So what to do at these times? How to separate dog fights without putting yourself at risk?
The mission seems difficult, but it is not impossible. To help you with this, the Paws of the House has prepared a short step-by-step guide to prevent the dog fight from going too far and being broken up early on. Here's what to do!
Step 1: Identify the signs that precede a dog fight
Knowing how canine language works is of great help at these times, as the dog attack is usually accompanied by some very evident body signs. Among them we can highlight: teeth showing, hair bristling, ears pointed forward and a stiff tail, at body height. In addition, the most common dog sounds in these circumstances are growls and grunts, indicating a dog attack.more aggressive and less friendly behavior - watch out for these signs!
Step 2: Clapping hands or banging pots helps break up dog fights
Making noises - as long as there is no shouting - is a way to get the animal's attention, diverting the focus of the dog fight. That's why clapping hands or banging a pot on the other usually works very well: as canine hearing is very sensitive, dogs will automatically stop the fight because they will be annoyed by the noises. This will give enough time to separate the bickering before the dog fights.confrontation returns.

If there is nothing nearby that makes a loud enough noise to make the dogs scared and withdrawn, another interesting option is to throw water on the animals involved. This strategy also works as a momentary distraction during the dog fight and is a safe option to break up the mess. You can do this by using a hose or simply filling a bucket with water (in the pool).Just as with noise, the ideal is to take advantage of their fright to separate them.
Step 4: To separate the fighting dog, prevent eye contact with the target
Depending on the size of the dogs that are fighting, you can try to prevent eye contact between them. To do this, it is worth placing any sturdy object that is nearby in the space between the animals. It can be a piece of wood, cardboard or any other material that can serve as a barrier, preventing the animal from being able to see its opponent. This distraction will give enough timeso that they are held and the fight is over.
Step 5: Under no circumstances yell at the fighting dog
Even if at the time of the dog fight desperation speaks louder, it is important to try to keep calm to prevent something worse from happening. Screaming turns out to be the most natural and immediate reaction of the human being, but it is not very recommended. This can alarm the dogs even more, making them even more willing to continue the battle. Ideally, the sound seems to be coming from the environment and not from the dog.As a last resort and if nothing above has worked, you can lift the hind legs of the fighting dog. He will lose his balance and it will be easier to separate the conflict.
